Starting a new career of any sort is an exciting time and a huge accomplishment! But when it comes to teaching, you’re not only thinking about your own needs—you’re also responsible for making sure your students have everything they need, too.
Before the school year begins, you’re juggling a thousand decisions:
- How will my classroom be arranged?
- How will I stay organized?
- What will my daily routine look like?
- How will I make my space feel welcoming?
With so much to think about, it’s easy to overlook some small but surprisingly essential items. Hopefully, this list will spark some ideas for your own teacher shopping list!
1. Simple Tool Kit
There are so many times during the year when I’ve thought, If only I had a screwdriver. Loose desk screws, wobbly bookshelves, even small glasses repairs—having a mini screwdriver (and a few basic tools) in your classroom can save the day.

2. Extension Cords
Even if your classroom is blessed with multiple outlets, they’re never where you want them to be. Case in point: I once planned a lesson on the Sun and Earth and needed to plug in a lamp in the middle of the room. Without an extension cord, it was impossible. Just check your school’s safety regulations before purchasing.

3. Ziplock Bags
Broken bracelets, missing earrings, random Lego pieces—students will hand you things and trust you to keep them safe. A stash of Ziplock bags makes it easy to store and return small items without losing track of them.

4. Dehumidifier
If you teach in a humid climate, you know the struggle. Papers curl, the air feels heavy, and everything just feels… sticky. A small classroom dehumidifier can make a big difference in comfort and in keeping materials from wilting.

5. Spray Deodorant
We all have body odor—it’s part of being human. But after a particularly sweaty gym class or field trip, spray deodorant is a lifesaver. (Use discreetly and only when appropriate, of course.)

6. Personal Laminator
Instead of waiting for the big, slow laminator in the staff room to heat up, keep a small one in your classroom. You can quickly protect posters, signs, or student work. Bonus: letting students laminate work they’re proud of is a big motivator.

7. Thank You Cards
Keep a pack of thank you cards handy. Whether it’s for a gift from a student, help from a colleague, or an unexpected act of kindness, it’s nice to be able to respond right away—while the moment is fresh in your mind.

8. A Dedicated Classroom Water Bottle
Some mornings don’t go as planned, and your reusable water bottle gets left behind on the kitchen counter. Keep a backup in your classroom so you’re never without water.

Final Thoughts
No matter how prepared you feel, there will always be something you wish you had. The good news is, every year you’ll add to your own “must-have” list. What’s something you wish you had your first year of teaching? Share it—I’d love to hear your ideas!
